Citric acid

Citric acid is simply the molecule that makes lemon juice acidic. It is also present in many of the human body's essential biological mechanisms. What does it do? Well, a cosmetic product should be about as acidic as its application area. This is measured with the pH (acidity index). The skin, for example, has a pH of around 5.5. This is quite acidic, and fortunately, it is this natural acidity that protects us from many chemical compounds and other microbes. To adjust a cosmetic product's pH (around 5.5 if it is to be applied to the skin), there are two major compounds, citric acid, to decrease it, and sodium hydroxide, to increase it. It is the right dosage of both in the formula that allows obtaining the target pH, for the safe use of your favorite product. ;)
