Citric acid

Citric acid is simply the molecule that makes lemon juice acidic. It is also very present in many essential biological mechanisms of the human body. Its use? Well, a cosmetic product should be about as acidic as its area of application. This is measured with pH (acidity index). The skin, for example, has a pH around 5.5. Rather acidic therefore, and fortunately because it is this natural acidity which protects us from many chemical compounds and other microbes.

To adjust the pH of a cosmetic product (around 5.5 if it is intended to be applied to the skin), we have two compounds: citric acid, to reduce it, and sodium hydroxide, to increase it. It is the right dosage of the two in the formula that allows you to obtain the target pH, for safe use of your product. ;)
