Ascorbyl palmitate
Ascorbyl palmitate is a magical ingredient with a thousand and one benefits (and we weigh our words)! But before telling you more about these different functions, let's dissect the name of this asset together.
It’s very simple! Ascorbyl palmitate is an active ingredient obtained following the fusion of two types of acid, ascorbic acid (which you know better under the name vitamin C) and palmitic acid (which can be found in certain oils, notably palm oil). This active ingredient therefore combines, on its own, some of the properties respectively recognized for ascorbic acid and palmitic acid! And why do we use it then? Patience, young Padawan, we are coming!
First, ascorbyl palmitate is known to effectively limit cell inflammation, which usually results in skin irritation. Then, ascorbyl palmitate promotes the synthesis of collagen in the skin, helping to maintain its firmness and support. It is for these two main reasons that we selected it to be integrated into the formula of our PREPA-SHAVE pre-shave lotion. Thanks to this, the epidermis is well relaxed and firms before passing the blade, thus necessarily limiting potential irritation. Let’s end this explanation by saying that it can also contribute to skin regeneration and the reduction of wrinkles.
That’s a lot for one asset, right? Ascorbyl palmitate is, in fact, found in skincare products thanks to the numerous benefits it brings to the skin, but not only that! This active ingredient is also well known for protecting your products from oxidation. But what does that mean? Well, here's an easy explanation, Made in Barbier. Oxidation is quite simply a degradation reaction that takes place in the presence of oxygen (typically, with air). Fatty substances are sensitive to oxidation, this is the case with butter which goes rancid and takes on an unpleasant smell and texture. In a cosmetic product, there is often water and fatty substances. These must therefore be protected from oxidation. For this, nothing better than ascorbic acid, a powerful antioxidant. Problem: Vitamin C is not soluble in oil, so it cannot protect it effectively. The solution? Merge it with another oil, notably palm oil, called palmitic acid.
And there you have it, there is nothing simpler. ;-)
