This molecule with a terrible name is part of the family of quaternary ammoniums. A family of compounds widely used in hair care for their conditioning effect. How does it work? Quaternary ammoniums are positively charged (+), while hair has a negative charge (-). Yes, our hair is electrically charged. But you've known for a long time that opposite charges are attracted to each other. Quaternary ammoniums attach to the hair, forming a sheath around the hair, making it smooth, soft, shiny, and easy to style. Quaternary ammoniums, often referred to as "quats" on forums, are decried for their poor environmental impact. But Distearoyl dimonium chloride is one of the few biodegradable "quats". So it's all good!
